Our Last Tonight

This song reminds me of the 2006 film "Crank." For those who have not watched the Jason Statham classic, the main character goes on a rampage, required to keep his heartrate up because not doing so will kill him, and that rampage continues for the entire movie from start to finish. The entire film is non-stop over-the-top stunts, without zero time dedicated to character development or any plot whatsoever.

While this song has more plot than the film, I wondered what I could do that would have cost $20,000 on an orchestra a few years ago, and this is what happened. Extreme countermelodies, over-the-top effects, and a unique "dark disco" theme that I don't think has appeared frequently before.

To achieve this level of detail, I had to spend over $55. It was relatively simple to generate the song's general structure, but obtaining the level of detail required meant inpainting and rebuilding a few seconds at a time - sometimes using 30 or 50 attempts for a single 10-second snippet.

Another challenge was obtaining the "continuous build" throughout the song. The models are apparently trained to use the same unchanging structure for each verse, and then build new instruments at the next chorus. Replacement of each line is needed to make the song develop during each sentence. Pay attention to the second verse, and you'll see a prime example of this - where each word seems to build upon the other - and during the bridge, where a sudden jump in energy occurs, which required a lot of editing to generate.
